‘Hero’ of Biggest Two-wheeler Manufacturer Passed Away

Brijmohan Lall Munjal, the architect behind the Hero MotoCorp group passed away on Sunday, at the age of 92. The cremation ceremony is to take place today afternoon. He was born in 1923 at Kamalia which is presently a part of Pakistan. After the Indo-Pak division, Brijmohan Lall Munjal along with his three brothers started a small shop of bicycle parts in Ludhiana in the 1940s which later became Hero Group, a two-wheeler manufacturer of the country, in 1956. There was no turning back after that, Hero MotoCorp is presently one of the largest two-wheeler companies of the world since 14 years. Moreover, Hero Cycles is the largest bicycle manufacturer since 1986.

Munjal was the head when Hero Group joined hands with world renowned Japanese manufacturers, Honda, in 1984. The company was named Hero Honda and went on to become world's largest motorcycle manufacturer. Hero’s collaboration with Honda ended in 2011. Apart from Hero, Munjal was on leading positions in many firms such as CII, SIAM, AICMA and PHD. He was also honoured with the prestigious 'Padma Bhushan' in 2005 for his contribution in the field of trade and industry.

Venu Srinivasan, Chairman of the TVS group, said, "The Indian automotive industry will miss him. He was a mentor not only to his family but for the industry." He added, "He stood for values, and had goodness and humility in abundant measure and achieved greatness during his lifetime. He was the exemplar that hard work and good values could still get you to the top."

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Airtel said, "India has today lost one of the finest business leaders of our times. His penchant for quality, development of aspiring entrepreneurs as vendors, exceptionally warm relationships and care for his family made him a very special person."

Arvind Kapur, Chairman, Rico said, "He was almost a godfather to us. He was the person who guided and supported us always. I would remember him as the true creator of ancillary in India. We would always seek help on various things and he would never say no. When he started exporting cycles, he also insisted us to export in the foreign market. I was a supplier in Delhi, he is the one who introduced technology and introduced us to the Japanese automobile industry."
