Hero, Honda and TVS lead sales chart while Suzuki and Bajaj record highest growth
In terms of sales, Hero Motocorp has been leading the two-wheeler market for a while now. For the month of July, they sold 6,79,862 two-wheelers in India, a growth of 9 percent over the number of bikes sold in July 2017. The launch of the Xtreme 200R, Xpulse, and 125cc Duet and Maestro Edge scooters should boost their sales in the coming month.
Honda has been going strong this financial year, posting sales above the 5 lakh mark for the third consecutive month. For the month of July, Honda has recorded a YOY (year on year) growth of 10 percent for domestic sales with 5,48,557 units of its two-wheelers sold. Their scooter portfolio holds a majority of the sales chunk, with 3,45,550 units sold in July this year. This can be attributed to the launch of the new Activa 5G a couple of months back. The launch of the 2018 Honda Dio, Aviator and Activa-i should further drive up sales numbers.
TVS Motors has had a good month, being third on the sales list as well as the growth list. In the month of July, they sold 2,47,382 two-wheelers and registered a YOY growth of 13 percent. Their scooter sales for July 2018 saw an impressive YOY growth of 29 percent, clocking 1,18,996 units. TVS scooter sales have been catching up with their bike sales that registered 1,21,431 units. This can be attributed to the strong sales of the TVS Jupiter and rising sales of the Ntorq that was launched a couple of months back. Like Honda, We expect TVS scooter sales to overtake their bikes in the coming months.
Bajaj Auto has had a good month as well, posting the second highest growth here. They sold 2,01,433 units this month, a YOY growth of 27 percent. Bajaj had recently revamped the entire Pulsar and Avenger range while also refreshing the Dominar and Platina.
Royal Enfield posted a domestic sales figure of 67,001 units for the month of July registering a YOY growth of 6 percent. While RE has been coming up with special editions and variants of its existing models, since the Himalayan, there have not been any new launches. This could be one of the reasons for them having the lowest growth percentage here. While they will be launching the 650cc Interceptor and Continental GT this year, it will first be intended for the global markets and will take some time to be launched in India.
Suzuki might have the lowest monthly sales figure here but they have recorded the highest growth rate here. They sold 53,321 two-wheelers in the month of July compared to 34,038 vehicles in July 2107. Thats a whopping YOY growth of 56.6 percent. The month of July also recorded Suzuki India’s highest monthly sales figure of all time. The growth can be attributed to Suzuki refreshing their Gixxer range as well as introducing the Intruder 150. They have just launched the Burgman Street and that should further help boost sales in the coming months.
