In the past, the iconic Kinetic Luna used to rival the TVS 50 moped. Both have evolved now: Kinetic has launched an electric avatar of Luna, called the E-Luna which poses as an alternative to the TVS XL100, widely used as a commercial workhorse around the country. Let’s find out how these 2 mopeds fare against each other:
Design
Both the E-Luna and XL100 have traditional moped designs. The E-Luna has a more barebones design and looks well integrated whereas the XL100 has more body panels that make it look slightly bulkier. Both mopeds have luggage-carrying space at the front and come with leg guards as standard.
The Kinetic E-Luna’s headlight is placed in a square nacelle. It has square mirrors and comes with a removable rear seat to help carry more luggage. E-Luna has a 150kg payload capacity. In the XL100, only the top variant has a nacelle with a small flyscreen while the round mirrors come as standard. It gets a single-piece seat in the comfort variants and a removable rear seat only in heavy-duty variants. The fuel-powered moped has a 130kg payload capacity.
While the Kinetic E-Luna is offered in two variants and five colour options, the TVS XL100 is available in five variants with 16 colour options. Additionally, The TVS XL100 also offers an optional retrofit kit designed for individuals with disabilities. This kit includes side wheels with fenders, independent suspension, and reflective tapes.
Engine/Motor
The Kinetic E-Luna is available in two variants. The E-Luna X1 variant comes with a 1.7kWh lithium-ion battery with a claimed range of up to 90km on one charge and has a 3-hour charging time. On the other hand, the X2 variant is equipped with a 2kWh lithium-ion battery pack, offering a claimed range of 110km with 4 hours of charging time. Both variants feature a 1.2kW electric motor and have a claimed top speed of 50kmph.
The TVS XL100 is powered by a 99.7cc single-cylinder engine that makes 4.4PS and 6.5Nm, paired with a CVT (continuously variable transmission). It has a top speed of around 60kmph and a claimed range of 80km. It has a 4-litre fuel tank.
Underpinnings
The Kinetic Green E-luna and the TVS XL100 both come with telescopic front forks and twin rear shocks. Both mopeds have drum brakes, while the E-Luna adds an additional layer of safety with CBS (combined braking system). They are fitted with 16-inch spoked wheels. The Kinetic E-Luna has a 96kg kerb weight whereas the TVS XL100 weighs 89kg.
Instrumentation and Features
Both mopeds are equipped with bulb headlights, taillights, and indicators. However, the XL100 also has an LED DRL placed under the headlight. They both offer a USB charging port.
The E-Luna features a digital instrument console that displays a speedometer, odometer, range, battery level and other indicators, and also has a USB charging port. It also has a side stand cut-off feature.
The TVS XL100 has a simple analogue instrument cluster that includes a speedometer, odometer and basic telltale lights. The moped offers a USB charging port with the mid and top variants.
Verdict
The TVS XL100, being an ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle, is more affordable, with a starting price of Rs 44,999 (ex-showroom) and offers the convenience of easy refuelling. On the other hand, the Kinetic E-Luna justifies its premium starting at Rs 69,990 (ex-showroom), with its digital display, connected features, very low running costs, and almost negligible maintenance expenses. The E-Luna will soon offer a customisation option directly from the factory.
In conclusion, both the Kinetic E-Luna and TVS XL100 provide distinct offerings for their respective price points. The choice ultimately depends on your individual needs and preferences.
