Mahindra is eyeing the premium two-wheeler market in India and it could rival Vespa with the launch of Peugeot scooters by 2017.
Mahindra Two Wheelers entered the premium segment of the Indian two-wheeler market last year with the launch of its flagship motorcycle Mojo. Now, having tasted success in the segment, the manufacturer seems to have planned on focusing on premium products in the future. With a 51 per cent stake in the French manufacturer Peugeot Motorcycles, Mahindra is likely to launch the premium brand in India by 2017. These scooters will compete against the likes of the Italian Vespa scooters in the market.
Mahindra Two Wheelers has been in the industry for years now, but its initial products failed to impress the targeted buyers. The few products launched before the Mojo, including the Centuro and the Gusto, had initial momentum but these products also failed to retain their charm in the long run. It is also a reason the company is looking forward to a good future in the premium segment.
Mahindra Two Wheelers already showcased some Peugeot scooters at the 2016 Auto Expo, including the Speedfight and the Django along with the three-wheeled leaning scooter, the Metropolis. The products look promising for the premium segment and already running successfully in Europe. However, the prices of the Peugeot scooters are higher with a noticeable margin than that of the Vespa scooters in the European market. Looking at this fact, Mahindra will have to work on the cost factor to bring these scooters in India with a competitive pricing if it wants to make them successful products like the Mojo.
