Mumbai-Pune Expressway to be Made Zero-Fatality Corridor

To reduce the number of casualties and severe road crash emergencies on Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mahindra along with the road safety NGO Save Life Foundation. The idea behind the initiative is to make the expressway a zero fatality corridor in the next few years. Even  Maharashtra Highway Police, IRB Infra., DY Patil Univ., Ogilvy, JP Research, and several hospitals will be collaborating for this mission. The programme was launched by Eknath Shinde, Minister of Public Works and Vijay Deshmukh, Minister of State for Public Works. 

Addressing the audiences during the event, Veejay Ram Nakra, senior vice president, sales & customer care, automotive division, M&M, said, “As responsible corporate citizens, we at Mahindra are committed to making India’s roads safer. In fact, road safety is expected to improve significantly when every component of the road system including the vehicle, road infrastructure, traffic  engineering, driver  training, road etiquette, enforcement, education, awareness, as well as the laws that govern the road system, have safety as an inherent virtue. Hence, this initiative is our contribution to making roads safer. It has always been our endeavour to educate people about road safety and going forward we will undertake multiple activities to help imbibe values of road safety.”

Further adding to the talks, RL Mopalwar, MD and vice-chairman of MSRDC, said, “MSRDC is committed to creating the safest roads in India and hence associated with SLF and Mahindra & Mahindra on this unique initiative. We invite the general public to support us in this initiative by ensuring they drive safely on the expressway.”

After this initiative concludes successfully, the public transport and the expressway will face lesser difficulties than the usual difficulties they go through on normal days. Recently, a lot of casualties have been reported on this highway because of the landslides due to heavy rain, let’s see how efficient this decision becomes and how far the government can take it. After all, it's our safety’s concern.
