The brand’s first electric scooter in India looks ready for a 2021 launch
- Performance is likely to be on par with Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube Electric.
- Test mules look production-ready.
- Could be priced around Rs 1.20 lakh.
After Bajaj and TVS, Suzuki seems to be gearing up to launch its first electric scooter in India. The test mules have been spotted for the second time in the last one month. Based on the Burgman Street platform, the e-scooter seems production-ready and in the final stage of testing.
While there’s nothing much to write home about at the moment, the new spy shots reveal some interesting details. The rear suspension setup, for instance, is different from its petrol-sipping counterpart likely due to the electric motor and battery housed in the space. The e-scooter also gets a swingarm cover and a tyre hugger. With the new tyre hugger in place, the e-scooter sports a shorter licence plate holder and rear fender.
So why did Suzuki choose Burgman for the new platform, instead of the popular Access 125? The Access has always been a simple and affordable scooter while the Burgman moniker has been the premium offering from the Japanese brand, not just in India, but other markets as well.
The Burgman Electric is likely to offer performance similar to the Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube. So, expect a range of around 85 to 90km. The price too is likely to be on par with the competition, so we expect Suzuki to price it at Rs 1.20 lakh.
One of the biggest setbacks for the sales of electric scooters is range anxiety. Bajaj and TVS offer home charging solutions for their e-scooters. It would be interesting to see if Suzuki follows suit or offers an alternative.
