New Zealand-based electric bikemaker UBCO makes quite an interesting electric motorcycle called the 2X2. Interesting because it is a two-wheel drive motorcycle with propulsion coming from two hub mounted electric motors. The 2X2 gets a utilitarian design which makes it adaptable to various industrial and even military applications.

The electric motorcycle is devoid of bodywork and features an external trellis frame made of a highly durable 7000 series alloy. It gets a front and rear rack that can be fitted with a parcel tray. Also impressive are 19 mounting points on the motorcycle frame which allows you to attach different mounts and even a trailer. The 2X2 is road legal and gets an LED headlamp, tail lamp, turn indicators, mirrors and a digital instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity. Optional accessories include carriers, soft panniers, camo fairings and even a mount which allows you to hitch the bike to the back of your SUV.

Two-wheel-drive comes courtesy of two 1kW hub mounted electric motors on each wheel. Together, they offer 184Nm of peak torque, which is more than enough to get you out of any sticky situation. If it doesn't you can simply pick the 68kg bike and get it out of said situation. Power comes courtesy of a 52.2Ah lithium-ion battery pack. It takes 6 to 8 hours to charge but can offer a range of 120km. The battery pack is portable and can also be used to charge other devices via a 12V power outlet or two USB ports.

It impresses with its suspension components too. The electric motorcycle gets 37mm forks with adjustable rebound damping and 130mm of travel and dual shock absorbers with adjustable preload and rebound damping with 120mm of suspension travel. It has 17-inch spoked aluminium wheels with off-road spec Kenda tyres. Braking is via 203mm front and rear disc brakes. It can carry weights of upto 150kg (including the rider).
The UBCO 2X2 is an ideal candidate as a motorcycle for the armed forces. Its lightweight nature and all-wheel-drive coupled with strong performance means you can cover remote regions with ease. The frame can take in a number of attachments like a set of gun holsters or emergency medical supply box. Even the 120km range should be ample for a sortie run. Best of all, the silent operation would ensure maximum stealth. This is something we would like to see our armed forces ride.
