The new BS6 scooters feature a lot more than cleaner motors. We list the new trends
The switch to BS6 norms has led to new trends in the scooter segment, offering more value than before. Here’s a closer look at the five biggest trends in BS6 scooters.
More fuel-efficient motor:
The most obvious change is the switch to fuel injection. The update allows for more efficient combustion and better fuel efficiency. Manufacturers are claiming that their BS6-compliant scooters are 10-15 per cent more fuel-efficient than their BS4 predecessors. Yamaha claims its 125cc motor is not only more powerful but also more fuel-efficient than the 113cc motor it replaces.
Switch to a larger 125cc motor:
Another interesting trend is the move from 110cc motors to more powerful and fuel-efficient motors. Hero has discontinued the 110cc Maestro Edge after introducing the Maestro Edge 125 BS6. Yamaha too has discontinued its 113cc lineup and replaced it with the Fascino 125 BS6 and Ray ZR 125 BS6. Even Honda’s first BS6 product was the Activa 125 BS6.
More features:
All premium 110cc and 125cc BS6 scooters now come with LED headlamps and LED tail lamps. It not only improves the aesthetics but also improves visibility at night and is more reliable than the conventional halogen setup. Another big feature addition has been the introduction of external fuel filler caps in the Honda Activa BS6, Dio BS6 and Suzuki Access 125 BS6. Most scooters now get a digital or semi-digital instrument console. Honda has added an extra feature called the ACG starter in the Activa 6G, Activa 125 BS6 and Dio BS6. This allows for a silent starting operation.
Comfort:
The BS6 compliant scooters now get better underpinnings. The Honda Activa 6G and Dio BS6 now get telescopic forks and a larger front wheel. The Yamaha Fascino 125 BS6 gets a new frame with revised ergonomics and a larger 12-inch front wheel. Another update has been the addition of a front disc brake. While the Honda Activa 6G and Dio BS6 still do not get a disc brake, the Yamaha Fascino 125 BS6 and Ray ZR BS6 both come equipped with one. Surprisingly, the BS4 TVS Jupiter was available with a front disc brake but that feature has been discontinued in the Jupiter BS6.
Price:
With all the updates prices for the BS6-compliant scooters have increased by 10-15 per cent over its BS4 predecessors. A major part of this price hike is due to the addition of fuel injection. The Vespa and Aprilia scooters have the most price hike with the BS6 compliant models costing Rs 17,000 to Rs 21,000 more than its BS4 predecessors.
