Royal Enfield, the two-wheeler subsidiary of Eicher Motors earlier announced that they had to suffer a loss of 11,200 units due to heavy rains in Chennai. Its two plants in Thiruvottiyur and Oragadam were down for a week, from December 1 to 7. Due to a high number of absent employees, these two plants are running at around 50% capacity for this week and will resume full operations from next week. This may result in an extended waiting period of Royal Enfield motorcycles. Other than RE, automobile companies like Hyundai, Ford, Renault and Apollo Tyres had also put a halt to their production work. Due to these rains, the Indian automotive market is facing a heavy loss as approximately 25% of total Indian production comes from Chennai and surrounding areas.
