UM Motorcycles will start the deliveries of its models in India from June 2016. The company entered the country with the launch of its Renegade range at the 2016 Auto Expo. Presently, the Indian line-up of UM Motorcycles consists of the Renegade Commando, the Renegade Classic and the Renegade Sport S. As far as the pricing, engine specifications and type of these motorcycles are concerned, these are the first ones that compete with the well-established 350cc offerings from Royal Enfield in India.
The company has come to the Indian shores in collaboration with Lohia Auto that will look after its production and will provide after sales network in India. Having completed over 1000 bookings since the launch took place, these Indian-produced bikes are also expected to be exported to some other countries. The 279cc engine of the Renegade bikes produces more power than the 350cc block of Royal Enfield. But, courtesy of the larger displacement, RE bikes are torquier. Even the power transfer of the Renegade range is better than the Royal Enfield as it uses a six-speed gearbox, compared to a five-speed unit used by RE. But, this is all on paper, the truth will be revealed when we put these bikes on tarmac and sweat them hard.
This new entrant in the Indian two-wheeler market has opened 22 dealerships across the country as a part of its expansion strategy. Keeping in mind the success and popularity of Royal Enfield, it could be difficult for UM Motorcycles to penetrate and gain market share in this RE dominated segment.
We have to just wait and watch to know how things turn out after the Renegades start performing on Indian roads. Let us know your views on the topic in the comments section below.
