FADA once again requests the Supreme Court to extend the BS6 deadline owing to the COVID-19 virus pandemic

  • The auto industry has been struggling to clear its remaining BS4 stock due to the ongoing pandemic.
  • The government had set April 1st as the cutoff date for selling BS4 vehicles.
  • The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has asked to extend the BS6 deadline from April 1st to May 31st.

BS6 extention due to Coronavirus

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has once again approached the Supreme Court asking for an extension to the April 1st BS6 deadline. The reason presented is the recent outbreak of COVID-19 virus that has led to poor sales and as a result, affected dealers trying to sell off their remaining BS4 inventory before the deadline. Also known as Coronavirus, the global pandemic has spread to major parts of India causing the government to impose lockdown in several states. This panic has potential customers staying away from dealerships, leading to a drop in sales by 60 to 70 percent over the past few days.

With many states asking shops, malls and dealerships to remain closed, the dealers could potentially be left with huge unsold inventory post the April 1 deadline. FADA has, therefore, approached the Supreme Court on behalf of the dealers to request that the BS6 deadline be extended to May 31st, by which time the virus outbreak will hopefully be contained and business can return to normal.

FADA President Ashish Harsharaj Kale stated, “Owning to situations which are beyond our control and the fact that many of our members may face dealership closures if leftover with unsold BS4 stocks, FADA has once again approached the apex body with a request for permission of sale and registration of BS-IV vehicles till 31st May ’20 and hopes to get an urgent hearing in the Hon’ble Supreme Court owing to the criticality of the issue and the deadline of 31st March approaching fast.”
