Here’s everything you need to know about Yamaha’s 941cc retro cruiser that’s just been launched in Japan
Yamaha has updated its Bolt cruiser for 2020. The cruiser motorcycle gets retro styling and a large air-cooled motor. Here’s all you need to know about this large capacity cruiser.
It is styled like a bobber:
Bobber styling influences come in the form of a raised teardrop fuel tank and flat handlebars. It gets a round headlamp, round tail lamp and round turn indicators. Even the instrument console is a round pod set below the handlebar. Even the pillion seat is removable for that authentic bobber look. For 2020, the Bolt range gets a new Black Metallic and Dark Purplish Blue Metallic paint job. Given the retro diktat, it has a halogen headlamp but gets modern features like an LED tail lamp and digital instrument console.

It gets an air-cooled motor:
Powering this retro cruiser is a large air-cooled 941cc V-twin motor. This torquey unit delivers a modest 54PS at 5500rpm but a substantial 80Nm at 3000rpm. That’s 10Nm more than the Harley-Davidson Iron 883! The Yamaha Bolt gets a 5-speed gearbox and a belt drive to deliver power to the rear wheel. Underpinnings include a double downtube frame with telescopic forks, dual shock absorbers and 19-inch front and 16-inch rear spoked wheels fitted with 100/90-19 and 150 / 80B-16 tubed tyres. Braking is via disc brakes at both ends with dual-channel ABS. It weighs 252kg and has an accessible 690mm seat height.

It comes in a premium R-Spec variant:
The Bolt R-Spec variant has been designed as an urban roadster and gets gloss black trim instead of chrome and a silver stripe on the fuel tank. While the motor and underpinnings are shared with the standard Bolt, it gets machined-cut alloy wheels and premium gas-charged rear shock absorbers.
Pricing and competition:
The Bolt is currently on sale in Japan and the US where it competes with the Harley Davidson Iron 883 and Suzuki Boulevard C50. Pricing for the Bolt in Japan is around 9,79,000 yen (Rs 6.95 lakh) while the Bolt R-spec will cost around 1,025,200 yen (Rs 7.27 lakh). Yamaha has no plans of launching the Bolt in India anytime soon.
