Yamaha could finally enter the ADV touring segment in India next year
[UPDATE: Yamaha has launched the FZ-X in India. Check out our launch story for the price, specs and other details.]
It’s no secret that Yamaha has been working on an adventure tourer offering for the Indian market. We had heard rumours that few units of the Yamaha WR 155 were brought down to India for testing and customer feedback. However, we haven’t heard anything more since then. Now, though, Yamaha has trademarked the name FZ-X, giving rise to speculation that it may be its upcoming ADV offering for India.

Yamaha has the XTZ-250 Lander on sale in South American markets. The 250 Lander is a hardcore dual-purpose bike with a long-travel suspension, a tall seat height of 78m, and proper off-road components. Yamaha is highly unlikely to get this bike to India, but interestingly, the Yamaha FZ25 and the Lander 250 are powered by the same 250cc motor with similar bore and stroke figures. In fact, the Yamaha Lander 250 was spotted on Indian soil in 2015, but for our market, we expect the FZ-X to be more of a mellowed-down ADV bike with more focus on touring and comfort, something on the lines of the Suzuki V-Strom 250.

It’s also possible that the Yamaha FZ-X is a new variant of the FZ 250. The Japanese brand recently introduced the Yamaha FZ-S Fi Vintage Edition and it could have trademarked the name for a similar purpose. However, we are hoping the Yamaha FZ-X 250 turns out to be a 250 ADV offering as it has no presence in the adventure tourer segment in India. Watch this space for more updates.
