The bikes were unveiled at a dealer event recently, hinting at an imminent launch
Yamaha, in a shocking development, has decided it's time to reintroduce the popular R3 in India. Tagging along is its streetfighter sibling - MT-03, and both motorcycles have the potential to liven up their individual segments if priced smartly. The two bikes were showcased at a dealer event in the country, recently.
Both motorcycles will be coming to India via the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route which means - they're still imports but assembled here. This should give them a certain degree of affordability. For perspective, the previous-gen BS4 Yamaha YZF-R3 was priced at Rs 3.51 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Taking into account the fact that the latest-gen R3 comes with a complete design overhaul along with updated underpinnings, and inflation, we are expecting the Yamaha R3 to be priced around Rs 4 lakh. Since the MT-03 is is essentially the R3 minus the fairing with streetfighter styling, expect it to be slightly more affordable, possibly at around Rs 3.8 lakh (all ex-showroom). Expect the two motorcycles to be launched some time around June-July this year.
It's highly likely that Yamaha India will again slot the R3 between the KTM RC390 which is locally manufactured and priced at Rs 3.16 lakh and the Kawasaki Ninja 400- which is a CBU (complete built-up unit) or full import and priced at Rs 5.19 lakh. See how much impact localisation can have on pricing?
At these prices, the R3 slots perfectly between the KTM RC 390 and the more premium Ninja 400. If the bikes are received well in the market, and if Yamaha ends up increasing the localisation factor of both the bikes, they can compete closely with KTM for a share of your money. If the pricing difference between say a KTM 390 Duke (Rs 2.96 lakh ex-showroom) and an MT-03 is narrow, you can get a twin-cylinder experience for not a lot more money. Are we praying Yamaha gets the pricing right? Yes, Yamaha!
