There have been a lot of guess games played on the Royal Enfield Cafe Racer, which made its first public appearance three years back at the 2010 Auto Expo, Delhi. Finally, it is looking like Royal Enfield is about to launch the much awaited bike soon, as the testing prototypes are doing rounds, and online media is being flooded by the articles. Amidst all this, a more interesting development has emerged, some of the images hint that it has been christened as Royal Enfield Continental GT. The Royal Enfield fans would know that Royal Enfield had launched a bike back in 70's with a similar name Continental GT250, which also had typical cafe racer attributes with a fiber tank ( yes a fiber fuel tank). However, the bike was not made available in India.
Recently, Mr. Siddhartha Lal, CEO Eicher Motors Ltd. took a prototype of the cafe racer out for a ride from Goa to Mangalore, through Gokarna on the NH17. The images show the same pre-production bike, which Mr. Lal rod. Royal Enfield Cafe Racer or Continental GT will be a typical cafe racer type bike, which will feature all the cafe racer styling with a round single-unit headlamp, elongated fuel tank, clip-on handlebars, bar-end mounted chrome side view mirrors, minimal body panels, chromed cigar shape exhaust, a single seat and a rectangular tail-light with aluminium mudguards.
The Royal Enfield Cafe Racer will also be the first Royal Enfield bike to feature the newly developed 535cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder, fuel injected engine, which is claimed to develop a maximum power output of 36bhp. Royal Enfield Cafe Racer will also use a twin-spar tubular steel frame designed by Harris Engineering. The suspension has also been upgraded, which will now use telescopic forks upfront, and a set of gas-charged shock absorbers at the rear bolted onto an elliptical tube swingarm. The braking system will be equipped with the discs at both front and rear wheels. Additionally, Royal Enfield will offer a wide range of accessories like aluminium fenders instead of plastic, aluminium upper and lower triple brackets, two different exhaust systems, café and clubman handlebars.
Royal Enfield hasn't disclosed Cafe Racer's India launch plans, however the bike is going to be launched in USA sometime in June-July, 2013. After the American launch, it will be launched in India by 2013-end and will be available as 2014 model. Keeping the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 pricing in mind, which was the last and latest offering from the manufacturer, we are expecting the Cafe Racer to boast a price tag of Rs. 1.60 lakh. So, for now the Royal Enfield fans have to wait for this mean machine.
