The latest iteration of the Speed Twin gets nifty cosmetic and mechanical updates

Last week, Triumph Motorcycles globally unveiled the updated Speed Twin and now, pre-bookings have commenced at Triumph dealerships across India for a token amount of Rs 50,000.

For 2021, Triumph has made notable updates on the modern classic. Its BS6-compliant 1,200cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin mill now makes 100PS at 7,250rpm, a 3PS bump compared to the previous iteration. The 112Nm of torque remains unchanged, though, it’s now available at 4,250rpm, instead of 4,950rpm. Overall, Triumph claims to have improved the mid-range power and torque and reduced the inertia by 17 percent.

Keeping the rubber side down are the updated riding modes (road, rain and sport), dual-channel ABS, and switchable traction control system. You also get a halogen headlamp with LED DRLs, LED turn indicators and tail lamp, a twin-pod analogue instrument cluster with a digital inset, and a USB charging socket under the seat.

The underpinnings have also been revised. It now gets a Marzocchi inverted fork with cartridge damping and a pair of preload-adjustable rear shock absorbers. The braking hardware too has been upgraded, with Brembo M50 radial callipers biting the twin 320mm discs up front whereas the rear setup stays the same with Nissin 2-piston callipers and a 220mm disc.

The bike rolls on new 17-inch cast aluminium alloys shod with grippy Metzeler Racetec RR tyres. While Triumph hasn’t tinkered around much with the Speed Twin’s looks, it now gets a brushed aluminium finished upswept exhaust with matte black tips.

With the second wave of the pandemic finally subsiding in the country, expect an official launch around July followed by deliveries in August. The 2021 Triumph Speed Twin may retail at around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) and rival the BMW R 1250 R and the Ducati Scrambler 1100.
