How does Royal Enfield’s Himalayan fare against its stripped-down counterpart
Royal Enfield launched the Scram 411 in March 2022, as a more affordable version of the adventure-focused Himalayan. That said, both the bikes received price hikes recently. Know more about the Scram’s price hike here and check out the Himalayan’s price hike story here.
At this point, the base model of the Scram costs Rs 16,024 less than the base model of the Himalayan. So how do the two siblings fare against each other? We tested them both extensively, and here’s how they stack up in terms of performance:
Acceleration
Tipping the scales at about 185kg, the Scram 411 is about 14kg lighter than the Himalayan. So while they’re closely matched till about 60kmph, the Scram’s weight advantage helps it pull away post that. It’s significantly quicker than the Himalayan to about 80kmph. But given this motor’s limitations around triple digit speeds, this difference narrows down as they both hit 100kmph in roughly the same time.
Roll-on Acceleration
The Himalayan chugs along in the 30-70kmph roll-on acceleration a tad bit better than the Scram. But in the 40-80kmph run is where the Scram’s lightness comes handy and it beats the Himalayan, though by a small margin.
Braking
Nothing highlights their weight difference as much as their braking figures. Their 14kg weight difference is the most evident here as we can see that the Scram stops more than a metre shorter than the Himalayan in almost every case despite having identical brakes. The Himalayan’s Achilles heel have been its soggy brakes and it’s visible in this comparo.
Though at 185kg, the Scram itself is a pretty heavy bike and we wish Royal Enfield had equipped both the bikes with better brakes.
Verdict
Starting at Rs 2,03,085, the Scram 411 is the bike that makes a lot more sense. It packs a good mix of everyday usability along with good capabilities off the road.
That said, if you’re looking for a scrambler-style motorcycle, you could also have a look at the Yezdi Scrambler. If hardcore ADVs are your thing, the Yezdi Adventure might be something you like.
