The 2022 iteration of the two bikes comply with Japan’s Reiwa 2 emission norms (equivalent to Euro 5 / BS6)
Suzuki has launched the 2022 iterations of its 125cc twins, the Suzuki GSX-R125 and GSX S125 in Japan. The updated bikes now comply with the nation’s Reiwa 2 emission norms that is equivalent to BS6 and Euro 5 emission norms.
The Euro-5-compliant version was globally unveiled in December 2021. In Japan, the faired bike retails at JPY 453,200 (around Rs 2.71 lakh) whereas the naked version costs JPY 420,200 (about Rs 2.51 lakh). The two bikes are made in and imported from Indonesia. While the GSX-R125 is available in three colours: blue, red, and black, the GSX-S125 comes in blue and black.
The two bikes are powered by a 124cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine churning out 15PS and 11Nm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The bikes remain the same as before mechanically, other than the cleaner engine.
In comparison, the KTM 125 Duke and the RC 125 make 14.5PS and 12Nm. More importantly, the GSX-R125 (at 137kg kerb) is 23kg lighter than the KTM RC 125 and at 135kg kerb, the GSX-S125 is 24kg lighter. That should translate to a better power-to-weight ratio.
Notable features on the machines include a fully digital instrument cluster, Suzuki Easy Start System, hazard lights, key slot with shutter, and dual-channel ABS. We wish Suzuki had equipped the bikes with smartphone connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation as even its 125cc scooter line-up including the Suzuki Access 125 and the Burgman Street are equipped with it.
Suzuki is unlikely to launch the 125cc bikes in India. However, if you’re looking for a premium 125cc motorcycle, you have the KTM 125 Duke and the RC 125 to go for. That said, more powerful alternatives include the Yamaha MT-15, and the R15 V4.
