The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways have issued a draft mentioning that all the two-wheelers with engine capacity of 125cc or above must come equipped with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and the ones below 125cc should have Combined Braking System (CBS). It is being done to reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to road accidents. This rule will come in action after two and half years from now, i.e., from April 2018 for the existing models and from April 2017 for the new models.

The statistics show that a total of 1.27 lac people were injured in two-wheeler accidents last year which included 32,524 deaths. This step has been taken by the Ministry to reduce the number of accidents in the country. Anti-lock Braking System or ABS is an automobile safety system that allows the wheels on a motor vehicle to maintain traction with the road surface while braking, preventing the wheels from locking up and avoiding uncontrolled skidding. On the other hand, Combined Braking System or CBS is a system which links both the front and the rear brakes so as to apply both of them in a controlled ratio when the rider pulls one of the brake levers. The amount of each brake applied may be determined by a proportional control valve.

Earlier in 2015, when the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had announced the deadline for this rule, Director, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Rashmi Urdhwareshe said, “We’ll implement new safety norms in a phased manner. These would be made available for all vehicles including trucks, buses, two-wheelers and even three-wheelers. For two-wheelers, safety feature like ABS will become mandatory. We will be coming out with a notification." She added, “Three-wheelers, which haven’t had any safety components, will get the new standards soon.”
