How does an electric scooter stack up against conventional 125cc scooters? The results will surprise you
Can an electric scooter perform on par and dare we say, even better than conventional scooters? That's a question we have been itching to find answers to since we first rode the Ather 450 in Bangalore. While we did not have the means or the time to test the Ather then, we felt the scooter’s performance to be similar to TVS’s sporty Ntorq. Now we have managed to get our hands on the Ather 450 in Pune and had just enough time to run performance tests on it (which means real-world range tests will have to wait). So is it as quick as we believe it to be?

Yes, barring the TVS Ntorq 125, the Ather 450 is the quickest scooter in the 0-60kmph acceleration run. With scooters, you spend most of your time in the city pottering around at 40kmph, so it helps a lot if your scooter is quick to reach the said speed. In that case, the Ather 450 impresses as well, being just 0.24 seconds slower than the Ntorq and 0.08 seconds slower than the Burgman Street. When it comes to top speed, the Ather 450 is electronically restricted to 85kmph.

Here, the Ather 450 is quicker than the other scooters by more than half a second! The electric motor’s swift torque delivery means that the Ather 450 managed to perform overtakes in the city with ease. The perfect scooter for city runabouts? We think so.

Here, the Ather takes more distance to come to a complete stop despite having a twin brake setup with CBS. The reason for the slowest braking time is due to the scooter using narrow, low rolling resistance tyres that are designed to maximise efficiency than outright grip. While it works fine under normal riding conditions, the front and rear wheels can easily lock up under panic braking. This meant during our brake tests, we had to go easy on the levers to avoid crashing the scooter.
