Ather Energy, a Bangalore-based technology start-up by two IIT graduates, has unveiled country’s first smart electric scooter today. One of the two founders and CEO of the company, Mr. Tarun Mehta has displayed the fully in-house developed scooter. He explained the functioning and features of this latest offering and told that it will be retailed online in the beginning. Also, this scooter will be available for a test ride in coming months starting from Bengaluru. For after-sales services, the company will be giving doorstep service. The company has received funding from Tiger Global and Flipkart founders Sachin & Binny Bansal.

The two-wheeler features a 7-inch touchscreen display with on board navigation, multiple riding modes, vehicle tracking, personalised profile, Linux-based platform and it can be reversed mechanically. Tarun mentioned that it may come with features to locate nearest charging point, road quality etc. Coming to the technical specifications, S340 can be charged to 80% in just 1 hour and has a battery life of around 50,000 kilometers. It can reach a top speed of 72kmph.

If launched with a competitive price tag, this 'Made in India' product can take the electric two-wheeler industry of India to an all new level. This scooter will also drive benefits from FAME-India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India) scheme which offers incentives on electric and hybrid automobiles. This will make the eScooter more lucrative for the Indian crowd. Going in detail, the FAME scheme offers incentives ranging between Rs. 1,800 to Rs. 29,000, depending on technology the battery operated scooters and motorcycles. Speaking about Ather S340, Tarun Mehta said, “The inevitability of electric being the future of automobiles has led us to build an uncompromising electric scooter – with a powerful Li-ion battery pack and sub-one hour charging. Our focus on connectivity as the key feature enables us to offer a host of features including personalised profiles for varying ride experience, multiple riding modes and on board navigation among the few.”
