Performance bike enthusiasts will be heard heaving a collective sigh as the first motorcycle built under TVS-BMW Motorrad collaboration is all set to hit Indian roads in mid-2016. The BMW G 310 R was unveiled during the festive season of 2015. This motorcycle will be produced by TVS at its plant in India, and has been engineered by BMW at its facility in Munich, Germany. It was also showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo alongside S 1000 RR, R nineT, S 1000 XR and R 1200 GS. Moreover, its fully-faired version, Akula 310, was seen grabbing eyeballs at the TVS stall. Being a jointly-developed product, G 310 R will share the same service network as the recently launched TVS Apache RTR 200. When launched in India, G 310 R is expected to be priced just over Rs. 3 lac and will compete with the likes of Benelli TNT 300, KTM 390 Duke and Kawasaki Z250.
Following the launch of G 310 R, TVS will be launching its faired sibling, Akula 310, during the festive season this year. Both these machines house a 313cc single cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that generates a maximum power of 34bhp at 9,500rpm and a peak torque of 28Nm at 7,500rpm. The mill comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The bike is equipped with 110/70 R17 front and 150/60 R17 rear tyre. For braking, it features 300mm and 240mm disc brakes at the front and rear wheel respectively. Suspension duties are carried out by inverted forks up front. The bike features a two-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) for safety.
The collaboration with Indian performance bike segment leader TVS, will ease some of the teething troubles for BMW as it makes its foray in the Indian two-wheeler market. Another major relief for BMW is that the only popular model that will compete with its offering is the 390 Duke.
