BMW Unveils 90th Anniversary Edition R nineT

The German auto major BMW has unvieled new 90th anniversary edition R1200 to celebrate the 90 years of pure riding fun. The bike has been christened as R nineT, which suits the purpose. The company started to manufacture motorbikes in 1923, and the first innovation of the company was R32, which uses a 486 cc side-valve air-cooled flat-twin engine. BMW R nineT is a retro roadster, which is powered by an air/oil-cooled, flat twin ('Boxer'), 4-stroke, 1,170cc engine using two camshafts and four radially aligned valves per cylinder along with the central balancer shaft. The bike churns out a maximum power of 110bhp at 7500rpm and delivers a peak torque of 119Nm at 6000rpm.

The bike is capable to attain over 200kmph speed. It uses a constant mesh 6-speed gearbox with helical gear teeth. To deliver the power from the transmission box to the final drive, it uses a unique shaft drive instead of the regular chain drive. The bike delivers pleasant mileage of 22kmpl at constant 90kmph speed, while in extreme conditions over 120kmph it returns 17kmpl. It uses a closed-loop 3-way catalytic converter with its stylish twin exhaust pipe at the left, and mathes EU-3 emission standard.

Front wheel of the bike is connected to its removeable pillion frame through 46 mm Upside-Down telescopic forks, while the rear swing arm damps on a central spring strut, spring pre-load hydraulically adjustable suspension. 320mm dual floating disc brakes are working on the front wheel with four-piston radial calipers and a 265mm disk brake with double-piston floating caliper has been used to stop the rear wheel. The bike weighs 222kg without filling its 18L fuel tank.

The bike has been made highly customizable with a huge range of official parts and accessories from BMW Motorrad, and using custom-made parts from specialist manufacturers. A two-part wiring setup separates the engine and ECU loom from the lights and indicators, allowing owners to easily customise their motorcycle. The custom accessories for the bike by the company includes- HP carbon mudguard, HP carbon engine cover, tank bag with attachment system, rear bag with attachment system, aluminium tail cover, kneepads, holder for silencer, LED side indicators, AkrapoviÄ sports silencer, custom rider’s seat with R nineT logo, comfort pillion passenger seat, safety bolt for oil filler neck, anti-theft alarm, cover for main frame bolting, heated grips and aluminium cylinder head cover protector.

Price of the BMW R nineR will be announced at the Motorcycle Live show starting from 23 November 2013 and the bike will be available in the UK from 15 March 2014.
