German bike maker BMW Motorrad showcased its two prototype electronic systems at CES 2016 offering a side view assist and the dynamic brake light. Also, this system shows the not-too-distant view to the rider. To make the ride safer and convenient, the head-up-display (HUD) helmet is powered by a laser lighting system to make it more functional.
The company showcased its innovations at the world’s largest consumer electronic show at Las Vegas. BMW also unveiled the iVision concept and Air Touch gesture control for its cars along with new concept systems for its motorcycle units. The new laser light headlamps provide pure white light and its high beam can reach up to 1,968 feet, which is double the length general headlamp beams. Also, the electronic system has a long life, which cuts the struggle of high-cost maintenance. The power consumption of the laser light has not been disclosed by the company yet, as the concept is still under development. According to the company, the commercial use of this light can be too expensive but will surely be made available in the future.
BMW is the latest to join the race as VU and Bike Systems have already invested in building the first HUD platform. The HUD system is designed keeping in mind the view of the rider, as the person does not have to see the instruments of the motorcycle if he/she is using an HUD system. A display is given in front of the right eye that displays the required information of speed, temperature, gear, fuel level etc.
The helmet is equipped with a rearview camera that gives a clear view to the rider, eliminating the use of mirrors. Other functions can also be configured depending upon the rider’s requirement. The system also includes a mini-computer and speakers that can be controlled wirelessly through the handlebar. Two batteries of the helmet, placed at its rear, can run up to 5 hours on one charge. The best part of this new system is its vehicle to vehicle connectivity from one rider to the other. The system will be introduced in the market in coming years, as per the company.
