After all these months of waiting, Kawasaki has finally launched the Ninja 300 BS6 in India at Rs 3.18 lakh (ex-showroom), just as we predicted.  The baby Ninja is dearer than the BS4 iteration by Rs 20,000. That said, it is an introductory price, and we expect it to get steeper in the coming months. So, what’s new in the Japanese brand’s most successful bike in our market?

Except for the new paint jobs that the brand showcased last week, and a greener engine (with updated pistons and a die-cast cylinder head), it is the same old Ninja that continues to draw power from the 296cc, parallel-twin engine developing 39PS at 11,000rpm and 26.1Nm at 10,000rpm. While the power is the same as the outgoing model’s, torque has gone down by 0.9Nm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch.

The 37mm telescopic fork and the monoshock are the same as those of the predecessor. The 290mm/220mm disc setup, paired with dual-piston calipers, has been carried over as well. Interestingly, the Ninja 300 has not put on any weight in its BS6 guise but now has a 5mm lower seat (at 785mm) and 5mm more ground clearance (at 140mm) -- both welcome changes.

The list of features hasn’t changed either. Although, we would have loved to see LED headlights or Kawasaki Rideology-connectivity that we have seen in the current-gen lineup. But Kawasaki’s decision to not invest much in the bike could stem from the fact that it has been discontinued in several markets.

The Kawasaki Ninja 300 BS6 can be booked via the brand’s website or through the nearest dealership. At Rs 3.18 lakh, it is quite an expensive affair, especially with the KTM RC390 in the picture, which is also due an update soon.
