Plus, there will be no road tax or RTO registration charges for EVs as well

Weeks after Gujarat announced its incentives for the adoption of electric vehicles, the government of Maharashtra has followed suit. The state’s subsidy scheme will offer additional subsidy benefits of up to Rs 44,000 for electric two-wheelers. Plus, for all the early adopters, there will be no RTO registration charges or road tax levied.

So how does this affect the prices of electric two wheelers? Here’s a small table to break down the amount of subsidies:

Amount

Basic subsidy

Rs 10,000

Early bird offer, valid until December 31, 2021

Rs 15,000

Battery warranty based incentive

Rs 12,000

ICE vehicle scrappage policy

Rs 7,000

Total

Rs 44,000

These benefits will be added to the revised FAME 2 subsidies, making it far, far more accessible to purchase an electric two-wheeler in Maharashtra. The only hurdle that we see in this policy is the battery warranty incentive. Most electric two-wheeler manufacturers offer only a 3-year warranty period, whereas the Rs 12,000 can only be availed if it is a 5-year period.

Also, we aren’t really sure how many existing ICE owners will opt for the scrappage policy. While electrics will act as great daily runabouts, for longer commutes or touring, ICE products will still have the edge. Nevertheless, citizens of Maharashtra can still enjoy an incentive of Rs 25,000 (plus the already offered FAME 2 benefit) on the purchase of a new electric vehicle.

If we were to apply Rs 25,000 as a subsidy amount, here’s how the prices of some of the popular electric vehicles will change:

Vehicle

New Price In Maharashtra

Ather 450 Plus

Rs 1,03,231

Ather 450X

Rs 1,22,241

Revolt RV400

Rs 86,999

TVS iQube Electric

Rs 90,898

Hero Electric Nyx HX (dual battery)

Rs 42,954

Ampere Magnus Pro

Rs 45,990

With the likes of the Ola Scooter, Simple One and many more electric offerings expected to hit our markets soon, adoption of electrics is going to boom. The Maharashtra government has also incentivised public charging infrastructure, which would only go a lot further in the acceptance of EVs as well as reduce range anxiety troubles.
