A Step-by-step Guide to Transferring Your Bike Across States

A Step-by-step Guide to Transferring Your Bike Across States

You must go through several formalities and furnish multiple documents to transfer bike registration from one state to another. The prominent step among them is to transfer the RC (Registration Certificate). 

1: Obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for RC transfer

The first and most crucial step is to get an NOC from the previous RTO to transfer your RC. Having an NOC means you have no dues pending and are clear for RC transfer to another state. Make sure the NOC mentions the chassis number of your vehicle. If you have taken a bank loan to buy your bike, you will need an additional NOC issued by that bank.

2: Physically Relocate the Bike to the New State

Now that you have obtained the NOC from your current state, you can transfer your bike to the state where you are relocating. Depending on the location, you can either ride or ship your bike to your new place.

3: Visit the Nearest RTO in Your New Place for Registration

The next step involves visiting the nearest RTO. You must submit the obtained NOC from the previous state and other important documents, including road tax receipts, driver's license, original RC, address proof, etc. The RTO will then assign you a new RC.

4: Pay the Road Tax

After registering the bike with the new RTO, pay the road tax applicable to that state. The RTO will generate a road tax challan, and you can pay the required fees to make your bike compliant with road regulations.

5: Get Your Bike Verified

The inspection officer at the RTO will inspect your bike by checking the imprints of the chassis number.

6: Obtain the RC

After the verification of the bike, you will get the new registration certificate. You would be asked to visit the RTO on a given date and collect the certificate.

7: Get the Road Tax Refund

If you have already paid the road tax in your previous state, you will be eligible for a refund of the road tax after re-registering your bike in the new state. You must submit the following documents to the previous RTO for this.

• Photocopy of the new and old RC.

The RC can also be transferred online; you just need to:

• Visit the Parivahan website after moving to the new state.

• Select the ‘vehicle-related services’ and then the new state to request a No Objection Certificate.

• Submit the required documents.

The cost of transferring RC to a new state includes:

• Rs. 30-35 (depending on the state) for ownership transfer completion.

• A smart card fee of Rs. 200 is to be paid if applicable in the state.
