Here’s all the information we’ve managed to decrypt in the past year
Lambretta, Vespa's arch-rival, once competed in the Indian scooter segment in the 1970s and ’80s but lost its footing in the market space as time passed on. That said, the Italian brand displayed its interest to return to the Indian market a little over a year ago by joining hands with Lohia Auto. Interestingly, the brand plans on taking the electric route to take on Vespa. Here’s what we’ve come to understand about the scooter.
What’s the electric scooter based on?
Lambretta took the wraps off its G325 scooter at EICMA last year, and the company says its upcoming electric scooter will be based on the same platform.
Design language:
Speaking of the Lambretta G325, it’s designed to look longer with a sharp, protruding beak. Same goes for the side panels which look a lot larger than conventional scooters. Step closer and you'd notice the slim and minimalistic handlebar section, just like the old Lambrettas. We could expect the same design to be carried over to the electric scooter.
Monocoque chassis:
The ICE-powered G325 scooter which was displayed at EICMA features a metal monocoque chassis with interchangeable side panels. Lambretta's, just like Vespas exotic range of scooter, are known for using monocoque chassis. And the same is likely to be used on the electric scooter.
Where will it position itself?
The Italian manufacturer will position its product as a premium offering which will help set itself apart from the sea of rebranded electric Chinese scooters that are sold in India. Unlike the plasticky body panels seen on these scooters, the upcoming electric from Lambretta may feature a complete metal monocoque chassis with large metal body panels. The build quality is expected to be top-notch. It's the same approach Bajaj took with the Chetak electric scooter. According to Lambretta, the upcoming G-Special will be a high-power scooter, which will put it up against the likes of the Ather 450.
Expected launch:
Lambretta was expected to make an appearance at the Delhi Auto Expo which took place in February this year. Unfortunately, it was a no show from their end. On top of this, we are currently battling with the COVID-19 crises which has had a massive impact on the two-wheeler industry and by extension, the economy. We believe, if Lambretta decides to make its way into India, it’s most likely going to be towards the end of 2020.
