Italian bikemaker Piaggio has been working on a new 150cc engine with its Chinese partner, Zongshen Motors. The G150S mill, yet to make it to any production model, could soon power the next generation of Aprilia scooters.
The G150S engine is a four-valve liquid-cooled unit that belts out 15PS and 14.9Nm. This is a step up from Aprilia’s current-gen 160cc three-valve engine producing 11PS at 7600rpm and 11.6Nm at 6000rpm. The new engine will make the Aprilia scooters’ performance on par with its competitors, like the Yamaha Aerox 155, Honda PCX160, or the Yamaha NMax 155, for that matter.

The new engine not just packs great performance but is also compatible with tech like keyless ignition, silent-start, and automatic engine cutoff when idling. In our market, we have already seen Yamaha Aerox 155 featuring silent-start and the bikemaker’s Automatic Stop & Start system.
In related news, Aprilia recently launched the 2021 SR 160, giving it a design overhaul but no major mechanical updates. With the Yamaha Aerox 155 on sale, Aprilia has lost its status of India’s most powerful scooter. But with the new engine, the Italian marque could hope to change that.
