The RC 390 is likely to carry a rather hefty price premium over its predecessor
A couple of days after its prices were leaked, our dealer sources have suggested that the much-awaited 2022 RC 390 will be launched in June 2022. That is quite saddening for those who have been waiting for the supersport for such a long period of time but also indicative of how severely impacted KTM is with the chipset shortage.
Even though the official launch was some time away, the prices of the 2022 KTM RC 390 surfaced on the website last week. If they are to be believed, the latest iteration of the supersport will come at a stonkingly high Rs 3,13,922 (ex-showroom Delhi), a steep premium of Rs 36,287 over its predecessor. While it is a generational change, the new RC doesn’t seem to justify the premium well, especially considering that the India-spec model misses out on adjustable suspension.
The new RC 390 gets a lighter trellis frame with a bolt-on subframe, five-spoke alloys which are cumulatively lighter by 2.7kg , a larger 13.7-litre fuel tank and lighter braking hardware. Besides, it’ll also get adjustable clip-on handlebars, which can be raised/lowered by 14mm, and also rotated inward/outward for a fully customisable riding stance. These updates aim at making the bike sharper and lighter.
The 2022 RC 390 comes packed with a new TFT instrument console (like the 390 Duke and Adventure) and upgraded electronics. Powering it will be the familiar 373cc engine pumping out 43.5PS and 37Nm (1Nm more thanks to the 40 percent larger airbox). Add to this the curved radiator, with a 10 percent (claimed) improved efficiency, and the chances of overheating in peak traffic are that much reduced as well.
We’ll have to wait to see how many of these changes make their way to the Indian-spec model. If you’re looking for a sub-400cc faired bike, you could also have a look at the TVS Apache RR 310 and the Kawasaki Ninja 300.
