Scooter sales grew in the first half of FY10

India's scooter segment is quickly growing due to robust demand and the country's major two-wheeler producers have posted robust growth in first half of FY10. As per Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM)report, the domestic scooter segment sales has grew by 52 percent to 11,63,127 units in the first half of this current fiscal year (2010-11) from 7,64,643 units in the same period of previous year. Vishnu Mathur, Director General of SIAM said, "At one point, people had written off scooters. However, scooters have been repositioned and it has helped. It is doing exceedingly well by targeting a different segment of customers."
Honda's best selling gear-less scooter, Honda Activa, is the market leader in India. Another major two-wheeler manufacturers like TVS Motors and Hero Honda have begun their production of gear-less scooters long time back. Hero Honda is presently selling Hero Honda Pleasure. It is getting wonderful response from the Indian buyers. It is specially made for Woman's.
Anil Dua said that "Earlier, the scooter market was mainly geared and male oriented. When we entered in 2006, with Pleasure, we came with gearless (product) and targeted the women's (segment) and the strategy worked. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India has sold 5,20,466 units in the first 7 months of this current financial year, a posted of 35.41 percent, compare with 3,84,369 units in the same moths of last fiscal year.
On the other hand, Chennai based leading two-wheeler market leader, TVS Motor has reported growth from 1,75,953 units 2009 to 2,54,812 units in this fiscal year, a jump of 44.82 percent. TVS Motor is currently selling one of the most popular scooters in India that includes TVS Scooty and TVS Wego.
