The burgeoning two wheeler market in India holds high promises for manufacturers like Suzuki Motors India Private Limited (SMIPL) to feel optimistic about. They are hoping to close this fiscal year at approximately 3.2 lakh units. Though this would be below what the company performed last year at around 3.45 lakh units, they are confident about their products and foresee the demand for their scooter and motorcycle lineup ahead.
SMIPL’s outgoing managing director, Mr. Masayoshi Ito says “India is one of the most important two-wheeler markets for Suzuki. Their goal is to hit the 1 million units mark by the year 2020. The goal though steep is achievable given the growing demand for both motorcycles and scooters among customers”. The future models that SMIPL plans to produce were not revealed but the company is certainly geared to meet the expectations and if needed even venture into the 200cc – 250cc scooter segment.
Presently, the company offers two scooters in the 125cc segment - the Access 125 and the Swish 125. Both have done very well as segment leaders. In the motorcycle space, Suzuki has been successful with their street sport 150cc Gixxer twins - the Gixxer and the Gixxer SF.
Yesterday, Suzuki launched the updated version of the Access 125 at Rs. 53,887 (ex-showroom, Delhi) which comes with many first in segment features. The Access 125 will compete against the likes of the Honda Activa 125 and the upcoming Mahindra Gusto 125.
The company also claims that they are planning to sell around 2 lakh units of their flagship scooter, the Access 125 in a year.
