Some known names, but it didn’t go quite as expected
The 150cc to 200cc space has a wide following, as it caters to everyone from commuters looking for a more premium experience, all the way to serious sport riders. Here’s how the segment fared in the past month:
Models |
February 2022 (Units) |
February 2023 (Units) |
TVS Apache RTR 160 / 160 4V / 180 |
16,406 |
34,935 |
Bajaj Pulsar 150 / P150 / N160 / NS160 / NS200 / RS 200 |
4,666 |
12,954 |
Yamaha R15 V4 |
6,405 |
7,697 |
KTM 200 Duke / RC200 |
2.318 |
3,254 |
Hero XPulse 200 4V / XPulse 200T 4V |
4,270 |
1,640 |
Topping the chart is TVS’ trio of the Apache RTR 160, Apache RTR 160 4V, and Apache RTR 180. All three continue the upward trend from the previous month, with a growth of 19.21 percent. A part of this can be attributed to the features these bikes have on offer, which includes everything from smartphone connectivity to segment-first riding modes.
And this is the main differentiating factor the Apaches have from the Bajaj Pulsar lineup (the Pulsar 150, Pulsar P150, Pulsar N160, Pulsar NS160, Pulsar NS200 and Pulsar RS 200) which, despite being collectively twice the number of models, are still number two on the list. And despite the recent update to the NS twins, they still do not get any connectivity options. Additionally, there’s also been a significant 28 percent drop compared to the sales from the past month.
In third place is the Yamaha R15 V4, the de-facto choice for sport riders which, despite the gap between it and the second-placed bike, still has maintained its overall numbers, considering the miniscule 2.91 percent month-on-month drop.
The second-last spot on the list goes to KTM’s duo, the 200 Duke and the RC 200, which continue the trend of securing about half the numbers than the bike above it on the list. That said, it registered a massive 42 percent increase in sales from January 2023.
And finally we have the Hero Xpulse 200 4V and Xpulse 200 T 4V bringing up the rear. The entry-level off-roader and its touring-oriented sibling are among our favourites, but it has suffered a notable drop in sales, not only compared to the same month last year, but also when compared to January 2023, with a 38 percent downturn.
However, we believe there might be a rise in sales in the days to come, particularly in the 150-200cc segment, usually associated with first-time riders who shall shortly be graduating schools and joining colleges.
