SYM is a popular Taiwanese brand that is well known for its scooters. Some of you may have heard of the brand thanks to its erstwhile joint venture with Kinetic that gave us the Flyte, a 125cc scooter, back in 2007. The company has now launched the SYM DRG BT sporty scooter in the Japanese market. And boy, does it look smashing! Let’s just say that if Lamborghini were to design a scooter, it would look like the DRG BT. The scooter is priced at 4,09,000 Yen (excluding taxes), which translates to around Rs 2.89 lakh.

The DRG BT is by far the sportiest-looking scooter we’ve ever seen in its segment. The apron gets numerous cuts and slashes, giving it a very alienesque look. Not surprisingly, SYM says the design is inspired by a dragon. Even the high-set tail section looks properly sleek. To cut down on the visual mass at the rear, it features a compact tyre hugger with an integrated license plate holder and indicators. The side profile is equally sporty thanks to the single-sided swingarm and sharply designed upswept exhaust. Being a sporty scooter, SYM has ensured that it has enough clearance for a massive 42-degree bank angle. It also gets 50:50 weight distribution for optimum dynamics.

Powering the SYM DRG BT is a 158cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled 4-valve, fuel-injected engine that churns out 14.84PS at 8500rpm and 15.44Nm at 5500rpm. In comparison, its primary rival, the Yamaha NMax 155, makes 15.36PS at 8000rpm and 13.9Nm at 6500rpm. But what’s really impressive about the SYM DRG BT is that the company claims it can return a mileage of 50kmpl. That’s really incredible for a scooter of its class! It also gets an idling stop-start system, a handy feature for conserving fuel on traffic-riddled roads.

The scooter employs a telescopic front fork and a unique mid-mounted preload-adjustable monoshock at the rear. Brakes include a petal disc on both ends with dual-channel Bosch ABS as standard. The 13-inch alloy wheels are wrapped with a meaty 120-section front and a 130-section rear tubeless tyre.

As far as the feature list is concerned, it comes with an all-LED lighting system and a fully digital instrument cluster which houses a tachometer apart from the usual set of data. The scooter also gets a hazard lamp switch. The underseat storage appears to be large enough for a half face helmet. For added practicality, the scooter gets an apron-mounted cubby hole with an integrated USB charging port.

The chances of this scooter being launched in India are very slim, especially considering the fact that the 150-160cc scooter segment is still in its budding stage, with the only contender at present being the Aprilia SR 160. The Italian brand is also planning to launch the Aprilia SXR160 maxi-style scooter in mid-2020. You can read more details about it here.
