Does TVS’ new 125cc family scooter make a good case for itself?
Among the many products TVS has launched this year, its new 125cc models are aimed at disrupting the segment. Of the two, the Jupiter 125 sparks more promise and aims to dethrone the Suzuki Access 125 as India’s best 125cc family scooter. But until we can pit the two against each other, here are some pros and cons of buying the Jupiter 125.
PROS
Convenience Galore
The Jupiter 125 makes living with a scooter much easier than any of its competitors. For starters, the fuel tank is located under the floorboard with the fuel filler cap positioned on the left of the steering column. You can open the flap via the ignition slot itself, which also unlocks the boot. The repositioning of the fuel tank has allowed TVS to offer a mahoosive 33 litres of storage space underneath the seat. Plus, TVS claims that the floor space is large enough to accommodate an LPG cylinder. The riding posture is easy and upright, with brilliantly cushioned seats to comfort your bottom on any journey.

Moderately Peppy
The motor on the Jupiter 125 is completely different from the one on the TVS NTorq 125. Besides the bore and stroke figures, the two engines do not share anything else. The Jupiter’s mill is a simpler 2-valve unit with less performance as frugality is key. However, on our short stint at the TVS test track, we came back impressed at just how peppy the Jupiter feels. Yes, it does want to hoon but thanks to a strong low- and mid-range performance, it should be very zippy to ride in the city.
Premium Build Quality
TVS has taken giant strides in improving the already high standards of quality it offers on its two-wheelers. Right from the choice of plastics to the switchgear to the paint finish to the panel gaps, everything feels top drawer, certainly the best in the 125cc scooter space.
CONS
Not Quite A Looker
As distinctly different as their 110cc counterparts look, the TVS Jupiter 125 and the Honda Activa 125 have an eerily similar face. The trapezoidal headlamp, the chrome accents, the integrated turn indicators and the lines across the front apron are quite like its Japanese rival. Thankfully, the side profile and tail do look quite different from the Activa, and the chunky derriere is a neat touch.
Pricey
The asking price of the base version of the TVS Jupiter 125 is the same as its primary rival, the Suzuki Access 125. However, the more premium variants do bear a certain premium over the Access and the Activa. In fact, the only variants of the Access that are dearer are the special colours versions and the connectivity module-enabled variants.
Should You Buy It?
Considering the performance, features and creature comforts on offer, the TVS Jupiter 125 does make a good case for itself and is one scooter that definitely should be on your radar when considering 125cc scooters. However, we shall have to wait until we test it against the Suzuki Access 125 to wholeheartedly recommend it as our pick of the 125cc family scooter segment.
