With the new motor, TVS could use the chassis of its ICE scooters, and convert them to electric

We have got our hands on new patent filings from TVS about a new swingarm-mounted electric motor. This motor could possibly bring down production costs for the company, and in turn result in cost-effective e-scooters.

The new electric motor looks very similar to a conventional ICE scooter’s unit. TVS has cleverly designed this new electric motor cleverly, that won’t just cut down the production cost, but could possibly make things like replacing the rear tyre easier than doing so a hub motor EV.

With the new design, the motor itself is placed near the floorboard, which is paired with a transmission that’s linked to the wheel axle. Interestingly, the gears get a dedicated oil chamber to keep them lubricated. This whole assembly is built in a single casing, which means that the motor can be a straight fit on a traditional ICE scooter chassis.

So, in theory, the Hosur-based company could have the same underbone chassis of the Jupiter or NTorq 125 and just swap the engine with this electric powertrain. This would bring down the R&D as well as production costs, making EVs more affordable.

TVS has already announced its grand plans of introducing six electric vehicles in the next two years. In fact, the company is also co-developing more EVs with BMW Motorrad. This new patent filing gives a glimpse into what the company’s future EVs could be like.
