US-based bike maker UM Motorcycles on Wednesday launched the Renegade Classic model from its cruiser line among its three launches during the day to mark its India foray in partnership with Delhi-based Lohia Auto. The Classic, which shares its platform and engine with the company’s Sport S and Commando, is priced at Rs. 1.69 lac (ex-showroom, Delhi). This motorcycle, with its name, traditional cruiser motorcycle styling, and price tag seems to suggest that the American company is gunning to carve a piece out of Royal Enfield’s customer base.
The Renegade Classic features a 279cc, single-cylinder, liquid cooled engine that comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The mill develops a maximum power of 25bhp at 8,500rpm and 21.8Nm of peak torque at 7,000rpm. With an 18-litre fuel tank, wide handlebars and a kerb weight of 172kg, the motorcycle looks ready to hit the highway in style.
One glitch that the company could face during its India entry is the lack of a solid dealer network. The company is presently selling bikes in Bangladesh and has already planned to set up 5 dealerships in India for the initial period of their operation.
