With the bike almost ready, an official launch should be just around the corner
[UPDATE: Yamaha has launched the FZ-X in India. Check out our launch story for the price, specs and other details.]
Last week, the upcoming Yamaha FZ-X was spotted at a service centre. That revealed just a few cosmetic details of the bike. Now, the upcoming Yammy has been spotted during a TVC shoot and here’s what the bike looks like.
It employs a round headlamp housing a projector bulb with LED DRLs around it. Adding to the styling cues is the brush-finished ring around the headlight. The number plate has been placed right below it, thereby keeping the front fender free of any mounts.
The fuel tank appears to be pretty large, with a gradual swoop towards the rider. Right below the fuel tank are the mock radiator shrouds (the FZ-X is air-cooled and doesn’t get a radiator). The handlebar is pulled back and closer to reach, a boon for short riders. The footpegs have been neutrally set and should make for a comfortable riding position. The Yamaha FZ-X gets a single-piece seat with a ribbed pattern and a tubular grab rail for the pillion. The bike is also equipped with a sump guard.
The previously leaked documents of the FZ-X made it clear that the bike will be powered by an air-cooled 149cc single-cylinder mill sourced from the FZ-S Fi. Output figures are 12.4PS at 7,250rpm and 13.3Nm at 5500rpm.
Yamaha has suspended the bike on a gaitered telescopic front fork with a rear monoshock and a box-section swingarm. Braking duties are carried by front and rear discs with ABS as standard. It rolls on alloy wheels wrapped in dual-purpose rubber. This means the FZ-X is more of a soft-roader than a hardcore off-road bike with retro-design elements.
Expect the upcoming Yamaha FZ-X to have a premium of Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 over the standard FZ-S once it’s launched in the country. The Yamaha FZ-X also makes us wonder whether Yamaha will be bringing the XSR-155 to India or this will be its only 150cc retro-styled offering. Given the popularity of the XSR-155 among Indian bikers, we are hopeful that the Japanese won’t shelve the XSR for our market.
