A closer look at how the Japanese scooter stacks up against its Indian rival

Yamaha has just launched the Cygnus Gryphus in the Japanese market. The sporty 125cc scooter is more than capable of competing against the TVS NTorq 125. To find out how these duo stack up against each other, we bring you a detailed photo comparison.

The fascia of both the scooters looks quite sharp. But there are a few differences–for starters, the Yamaha Gryphus gets a split LED headlight setup while the TVS NTorq gets a single-piece LED headlamp unit with DRL's. Meanwhile, the turn indicators are mounted on the handlebar of the NTorq while the Gryphus has it mounted on its apron.

Moving to the side, you'll notice that both scooters look quite identical, and they also feature a few graphics. And they both also feature a lean tail section with an LED taillight.

On the features front, the Yamaha Gryphus gets a blue-backlit LCD instrument cluster, a multifunction keyhole, a 28-litre under-seat storage space and a cubby hole that can hold a 500ml bottle. This cubby hole also features a USB charging port.

The TVS NTorq on the other hand comes equipped with a Bluetooth-enabled instrument cluster with turn-by-turn navigation, an engine kill switch, two riding modes: Street and Race (only Race XP variant), and 22-litres under-seat storage that comes with a USB charger and an illumination light.

The Yamaha Cygnus Gryphus is powered by a 125cc single-cylinder engine that churns out 12PS and 11Nm. Meanwhile, the TVS NTorq's 124.8cc motor produces slightly lesser power and torque at 9.38PS and 10.5Nm respectively.

The front suspension is similar on both scooters as they employ a telescopic fork. However, for the rear suspension the Yamaha Gryphus employs twin shock absorbers while the TVS NTorq features a monoshock. The braking hardware is also different as the NTorq mounts a disc at the front and a drum at the rear while the Gryphus employs disc brakes at both ends. There is one similarity though as both the scooters ride on 12-inch alloy wheels.

The Yamaha Gryphus is available only in Japan as of now in four colour options: Grey, Blue, White and Black and the scooter is priced at 3,57,500 yen (approx Rs 2.3 lakh). Meanwhile, the NTorq in India is available in a total of twelve colour options and the price starts at Rs 73,795 (ex-showroom Delhi).
