Yamaha MT-15 Bookings Commence; India Launch Soon

Select Yamaha dealerships are accepting bookings for Rs 5,000

[UPDATE: Yamaha has launched the MT-15 at a price of Rs 1.36 Lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi]

• Yamaha is expected to launch the MT-15 by late-February or early-March.
• Deliveries for the bike are likely to begin in April.
• The bike shares components like the engine, transmission, brakes and instrument cluster with the R15 v3.0.

Bookings for the MT-15, Yamaha’s streetfighter naked, have commenced at select company dealerships. We spoke to a few Yamaha dealers across different cities and received confirmation that the upcoming bike can be booked for an amount of Rs 5,000. Although details of the official pricing were not available, we expect the bike to retail at Rs 1.2 lakh (ex-showroom). As for test rides and deliveries of the MT-15, dealers we spoke to confirmed an April timeline.

So far, the Yamaha MT-15 has been spotted testing in India a couple of times. Although heavily camouflaged, several details of the bike have come to light. For starters, the India-spec model will get the same predator-style headlamp arrangement that’s present on the international model. On the downside, the Indian MT-15 is likely to made do with telescopic forks and a box-section swingarm instead of the international version’s USD forks and aluminium swingarm.

The MT-15 is the naked version of the Yamaha R15 v3.0. It uses the same engine that produces 19.3PS of power and 15Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed transmission, suspension setup, electricals and full-digital instrument console as its faired sibling. In fact, the bike will also get the dual-channel ABS unit that was recently introduced on the R15. However, the MT-15 will offer more comfortable ergonomics owing to its relaxed rider triangle. This should be welcomed by those who like the overall package that the R15 v3.0 offers but avoid it for its super-aggressive riding posture.

In terms of competition, the bike will take on the KTM 125 Duke (Rs 1.18 lakh), the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V ABS R 2.0 (Rs 1.11 lakh) and the Pulsar NS200 ABS (Rs 1.12 lakh) - all ex-showroom Delhi.
