Yamaha has showcased the MT-09, MT-07 and the R7 in India. Here’s when the bikes could be launched
After years of us praying (read: borderline begging) to Yamaha for it to bring its big bikes to India, the Japanese marque has finally fulfilled our wishes. It has showcased the R7, MT-07 and the MT-09 at a dealer event in the country. This was alongside the brand’s 300cc bikes.
The R7 and MT-07 are powered by a 689cc twin-cylinder mill making 73.4PS and 67Nm. The R7 comes to our shores at the perfect time as manufacturers are shifting their 600cc supersports to bigger-engined, more usable ones.
We expect the bikes to be here sometime later this year, possibly around June-July. The MT-07 and R7 could be priced around the Rs 8 lakh and Rs 9 lakh mark respectively (ex-showroom). The two bikes will go up against the Honda CB650R, Moto Morini Seiemmezzo 6 ½, Triumph Trident 660, Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Honda CBR650R.

The MT-09, on the other hand, is one hooligan of a bike. Its 890cc inline-triple cylinder heart has 119PS and 93Nm on tap. Expect the bike to be priced at around Rs 13 lakh (ex-showroom), and will rival the upcoming 2023 Triumph Street Triple R. While the showcased bike was the standard MT-09, we’d love if the SP variant, with its more sophisticated suspension, better brakes and beautiful livery, we’d absolutely love it!
Given that Yamaha’s TVC last year featured the MT-09 SP, it is likely that the variant will come to our shores, likely at around the Rs 16 lakh (ex-showroom) mark. It'll serve as the perfect rival to the upcoming Triumph Street Triple RS, which is expected to be priced around Rs 11.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
