The upcoming maxi-scooter has been delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic
We first saw the Aprilia SXR 160 maxi-scooter at the 2020 Auto Expo in February. The 160cc scooter was slated to launch this year with deliveries expected to begin by mid-2020. However, we had learned from Piaggio India’s MD and CEO, Diego Graffi, that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic had delayed the scooter’s launch to September. Now, according to Mr Graffi, the SXR 160’s launch has further been pushed to November 2020.

While no reason was given for the delay this time, we feel that the longer lockdown period has a larger role to play here. That’s quite disappointing as enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for the arrival of the new maxi-scooter. The new scooter not just gets an all-new look but also appears more practical than Aprilia’s SR 125 and SR 160 scooters. It gets features like all-LED lighting, a digital instrument console and a lockable apron-mounted glovebox. It is powered by the same BS6-compliant 160cc fuel-injected motor it shares with the SR 160. It could be offered with a slightly different state of tune than the SR 160’s 11PS and 11.6Nm. Aprilia will also offer the SXR with a smaller 125cc motor. It will be called the SXR 125.

The SXR 160 is expected to be the most expensive scooter in the Aprilia India lineup. When launched, it is expected to be priced around Rs 1.24 lakh (ex-showroom). There have been no all-new products coming from the Italian bikemaker despite us seeing products like the RS 150 and Tuono 150 at the previous Auto Expos. We do hope we see a couple of them at least launch this year.
