Find out why the updated Ather e-scoot is still a viable economic option
Ather Energy has been in the Indian market for a long time, so long that its first offering led to the genesis of the premium electric scooter segment. Since then, Ather e-scoots packed reliable and exciting performance along with unique features like no other product in the market. However, over the past 18 months, this segment has seen massive changes and competition has creeped in from new and established companies.
While Ola Electric presented the S1 Pro, TVS introduced the iQube in three variants. Simple Energy too launched its e-scooter, called the One a year ago, however deliveries are yet to commence. These rivals claimed to offer performance that bettered the Ather 450X, while undercutting the price too. Ather, in response, did roll-out crucial updates for the 450 range, called the Gen 3 models now, in the form of bigger batteries and sporty tyres among others, accompanied by a small premium.

However, the 450X, Ather’s flagship offering, continues to remain at the high end of the price spectrum with a price tag of Rs 1,39,005. In comparison, the Simple One is priced at Rs 1,09,999 and the Ola S1 Pro retails at Rs 1,20,149 (all prices on-road Delhi including FAME II subsidy and State EV subsidy).
However, new buyers of the 450X Gen 3 will certainly get a plum deal, the primary reason being that the 450X is a tried and tested platform. There are over 40,000 Ather e-scooters on the road currently, and being connected vehicles, these e-scoots are constantly collecting data on how they are being ridden. Ather claims that over 218 million kilometres of ride data was used along with feedback from existing customers to develop the 450X Gen 3.
The 450X particularly has stood the test of time and harsh Indian weather conditions. It has proven itself to be a reliable workhorse that is also particularly fun to ride. And now it gets exactly what older Ather customers have been asking for - a bigger battery. That too for a small premium, despite the battery pack being the most expensive component in an EV. While the Ola S1 Pro or the Simple One might feature a souped up spec sheet, these scooters are yet to prove their durability on Indian roads.
