The motorcycle is expected to be launched this month

[UPDATE: Bajaj Dominar 250 Launched; Rs 30,000 Cheaper Than Bajaj Dominar 400!]

  • The Bajaj Dominar 250’s motor is based on the KTM 250 Duke.
  • Design-wise, the bike looks pretty similar to the flagship version, the Dominar 400.
  • To keep the costs competitive, the motorcycle features a box-section swingarm.
  • Unofficial bookings are already open at select dealerships.

The Bajaj Dominar 250 has started reaching select dealerships across the country ahead of its official launch. The motorcycle is expected to be launched in the coming weeks and expect the Pune-based bikemaker to price the bike between Rs 1.6 lakh and Rs 1.7 lakh (ex-showroom). Select dealerships have already started accepting unofficial bookings for the motorcycle. It will essentially serve as a more affordable entry point to Bajaj’s flagship Dominar family.

As you can see, Bajaj has tried to make the motorcycle look as premium as the Dominar 400. The design is identical and Bajaj has not compromised even on the beefy inverted front fork. The rear, however, gets a box-section swingarm instead of the cast unit on the Dominar 400. This should help Bajaj keep its prices competitive. The bike retains the same gas-charged monoshock as its elder brother.

The tyres look a little slimmer than the Dominar 400, which should also contribute to saving costs. As expected, the bike gets disc brakes on both ends, presumably with dual-channel ABS as standard. We had expected it to come with a simpler single-exit exhaust but Bajaj seems to have generously retained the sportier-looking dual-exit unit.

The motorcycle comes with a KTM 250 Duke BS6-derived single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. Expect it to have a little more relaxed state of tune compared to the Austrian hooligan. In the Duke, it makes 30PS and 24Nm, mated to a 6-speed transmission.

Another interesting point to note is that the bike comes in red and black dual-tone colour. This colour isn’t currently available in the more expensive Dominar 400 but it did make an appearance in a couple of the bike’s promotional videos. To keep the premium quotient intact, the bike gets a split type full-digital instrument cluster and an all-LED lighting system.

If Bajaj manages to price it according to our educated guess, then it will fall into the same ballpark pricing as the Royal Enfield Classic 350 BS6 range and the Jawa BS6. The former sells in volumes and the Dominar 250 will give Bajaj a fighting chance to tap into the potential of this segment.

The Dominar 250 may make Bajaj look like it is diluting the Dominar family’s premium quotient. However, it looks like a good business decision as downsizing makes products a lot more affordable. A fine example of this trend is the KTM 125 Duke. Even though it’s woefully underpowered, it gets all the premium components that a Duke deserves and this makes the motorcycle pretty desirable. In fact, it is one of KTM’s best-selling motorcycles in India.
