The Bajaj Dominar 400 has become the first Indian bike to be ridden in the frozen continent of Antarctica. The feat was achieved as part of the epic ‘Polar Odyssey’, which involved three Dominar bikes covering a distance of over 51,000km across three continents and 15 countries. Piloting the Dominars was the trio of Deepak Kamath, Avinash PS and Deepak Gupta. Impressively, the riders used almost stock Dominar bikes for the expedition.

The journey to Antarctica began at Pune from where the odyssey was flagged off in July 2018. Thereafter, the Dominars were shipped to the Alaskan Arctic and thus began the epic ride. From there on, Kamath and his fellow riders criss-crossed the North and South American continents before eventually making their way to the Uruguay Base in Antarctica. The actual ride was spread over 99 days and took the three riders across 15 countries. The three Dominars were also ridden through some of the harshest roads in the world like the Pan-American section of Chile’s Atacama desert and Bolivia’s infamous Death Road.

This is a significant achievement for the men as well as their machines. According to Bajaj, there wasn’t a single instance of a breakdown among the three Dominar bikes. What makes the feat even more stellar is that these Dominars were almost stock. The only alterations made to the bikes’ exterior were to enhance their touring-friendliness. For instance, the front fender was replaced with an ADV-style beak, a larger windscreen, broader and cushier saddle, knuckle guards, all-weather tyres, panniers and jerry cans for spare fuel were also added.

The Polar Odyssey comes like a shot in the arm for Bajaj, which has positioned the Dominar as a touring-friendly motorcycle. However, this is not the first time an expedition of this kind has been completed on the Dominar. During the Trans-Siberian Odyssey, Kamath was again at the forefront of a trio of Bajaj Dominars over a distance of almost 16,000km from Central Asia to Russia.

The news of the achievement comes just as Bajaj is about to launch the new Dominar. The 2019 Bajaj Dominar 400 gets several visual and functional upgrades over the outgoing one. These include USD forks, a new bassier-sounding exhaust, an updated instrument console and minor styling enhancements. Bajaj is expected to launch the updated Dominar in February at a premium of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 over the existing Dominar 400, which is priced at Rs 1.63 (ex-showroom Delhi).
