The 2015 Tokyo Motor Show is underway and petrolheads around the world are beginning to get loads to talk about all the interesting stuff... what's with Yamaha showing their very first car concept?
However, this is about a pretty interesting two-wheeler concept, based on actual motorcycles, from Honda. In 2013, Honda revealed an all-new 125cc motorcycle Grom. An absolutely fun, little motorcycle with upside-down front forks, rear mono-suspension and 12-inch wheels made sure that riders will have the widest grin on their faces while riding one.
Engineers at Honda have now combined Grom with their 50cc Monkey bike (sold in Japan) and created two very interesting concepts out of them called Grom 50 Scrambler Concept.
There are two Grom 50 Scrambler Concepts - a Silver colored version and the other one with Matt Green finishing. Both have certain similarities and uniqueness in terms of engine and design.
The two concepts share the same 4 stroke, air cooled, single cylinder 50cc, horizontal layout engine from the Monkey bike. The front suspension is same as well with upside-down forks and while both have a mono-shock at the rear, the swing-arm in the Matt Green version appears modern and radical compared to the typical rectangular swing-arm in the Silver colored version.
Moreover, since these are Scrambler concepts, both have upswept silencers going towards the tail; yet, the one on the Matt Green version appears shorter towards the end. Handlebars appear to be same on both, but on the Matt Green version it is finished in matt black while on the Silver version it is finished in gloss black. Both versions have LED headlights and tail lamps; however, indicators on the Matt Green version are LED as well. Spoked wheels are similar as well.
Both have a rounded digital display console; however, the layout to present information is different. Overall, the Matt Green concept is a modern interpretation of the Scrambler design while the Silver one is more retro.
No technical details have been made available yet, but we would speculate the power and torque figures could be 3.4PS @ 8500RPM and 3.4NM @ 5000RPM since this is what the 50cc Monkey engine produces. Lastly, the wheels in both concepts appear to be 12 inches in diameter. The 125cc Grom weighs 101.7kgs ready-to-ride, so it would be safe to assume that the concepts would weigh about the same.
These small Scrambler concepts look utterly fun riding motorcycles with low maintenance and Honda's bulletproof reliability. We like them.
