Here’s your first look at Hero’s answer to the Royal Enfield Himalayan and TVS Apache RR 310
New spy shots emerging from Ladakh reveal that the Indian marque is currently testing two bikes slated to be offered in the 400cc segment. These spy shots reveal one bike to be an adventure motorcycle, while the other a fully faired motorcycle. There is no confirmation as of now, but as per our guess, these are bound to be the XPulse 400 and Xtreme 400S.
While Hero MotoCorp is the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world, it doesn’t have any offerings beyond the 200cc segment. Their current flagship 200cc bikes are the off-road focussed XPulse 200 4V and the sporty Xtreme 200S.
Back in 2020, Hero had showcased a Dakar rally bike-based prototype with a 450cc engine mated to a trellis frame. The test mules spotted also seem to feature a trellis frame, while the engine bears similar aesthetic to the mill seen on the prototype. That said, the production version of the Dakar-based prototype is likely to have a smaller displacement engine, possibly around 400cc. The test mules were said to be registered with the Jaipur (RJ14) RTO, which is where Hero’s Research and Development centre is located.
The XPulse 400 appears to be rolling on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoke wheels like the XPulse 200. However, it is likely to get chunkier all-terrain rubber. The front beak looks to be stubbier than the XPulse 200. This bike will compete with the Royal Enfield Himalayan, KTM 390 Adventure, Yezdi Adventure and BMW G 310 GS.
Hero’s fully faired 400cc test mule, the Xtreme 400S, gets neatly designed fairing, alloy wheels, sporty clip-on handlebars, split seats and LED headlights. It will take on the likes of the TVS Apache RR 310, BMW G 310 RR and KTM RC 390. Both bikes will be powered by the same 400cc engine; however, the tuning will be different for each.

The prototypes will likely be unveiled late this year at the EICMA, and the final production-ready versions will be showcased at the Auto Expo in February 2023. Expect Hero to launch both these bikes in late 2023. Also, as is the case with every Hero motorcycle, it is safe to assume that both these bikes too can undercut competition by a significant margin to make them value-for-money propositions.
