Honda to Start Production of EV-Cub; Launch in 2018!

After Yamaha had revealed the plans of bringing its three-wheeled concept to life, Honda has announced that it will also start the manufacturing of the electric version of Honda Super Cub concept which was unveiled at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. This model is expected to arrive at showrooms in 2018. This announcement was made by Takahiro Hachigo, president and chief executive, Honda, during a press conference in Japan. With the need for electric vehicles growing due to high pollution levels, this EV-Cub can prove to be a great offering in the sector. It will be first launched in Japan initially and then it might be added to Honda’s line-up for other Asian countries.

Speaking about the EV-Cub, Takahiro Hachigo said, "We are planning to introduce the EV-CUB, a mass-production model developed based on the EV-CUB Concept electric motorcycle, to the Japanese market about two years from now and then subsequently in main ASEAN countries, which have been the largest market for the Honda Cub Series.” He added, “Building on the Cub models, which have taken deep root in people's everyday lives, we will strive to popularise the EV and reduce CO2 emissions."

Keeping in mind the future of electric vehicles, more companies have started focusing towards producing EVs. A Bengaluru-based company owned by two IITians has recently unveiled Ather S340 in India which will bring an all new segment to Indian electric two-wheeler industry. S340 features a 7-inch touchscreen display with onboard navigation, multiple riding modes, vehicle tracking, personalised profile, Linux-based platform and it can be reversed mechanically. This EV can be charged to 80% in just 1 hour and the battery has a life of approximately 50,000 kilometers. It can reach a top speed of 72kmph.

In the electric segment, Honda will have to rival its old partner, Hero. If and when launched in India, Honda might price it competitively to compete with Hero Electric, which already has well-established market in the country.
