Suzuki was the only manufacturer to post positive growth in June
- Royal Enfield’s domestic sales were down by 24 per cent.
- TVS sold more than 2.83 lakh units in the month of June.
- Bajaj’s updated Dominar 400 outsold RE’s 350cc bikes.
So far, 2019 has been quite a sluggish year in terms of two-wheeler sales. While Royal Enfield is still struggling to post positive growth this year, Bajaj too has faced a minor dip in sales last month. Let’s find out how others have fared in terms of sales, shall we?
Royal Enfield:
Royal Enfield has been struggling for the past few months now. While it sold 74,697 units in May 2018, it only managed to sell 62,371 units in the same month this year. June was no exception either as the company reported a decline of 24 per cent in domestic sales. It managed to sell just 55,082 units compared to 72,588 in June 2018. While its 350cc range of motorcycles registered a negative growth of 25 per cent, the 500cc range reported a growth of 17 per cent. While RE has been struggling to keep its domestic sales on the positive end of the spectrum, international sales grew by 72 per cent! One of the reasons why the company is doing so well in the international markets could be the 650 twins, which have been received quite well by two-wheeler enthusiasts abroad.
Bajaj:
While Bajaj posted a growth of 7 per cent in May, the Chakan-based bike maker saw a minor dip of 1 per cent in domestic sales in June 2019. The company’s exports, however, have seen a tremendous growth of 11 per cent. In total, Bajaj sold 3.51 lakh units in June compared to 3.37 lakh units in the same month last year. However, we think that this slight slump in domestic sales is temporary and the company might bounce back soon. The company’s flagship motorcycle, the Dominar 400, is currently raking in some pretty good numbers. Apart from that, Bajaj has also launched a bunch of new motorcycles in order to increase the footfall in its showrooms. The company has already launched the new Platina 110 H-Gear and the Avenger 160. And now, it is gearing up to introduce the new CT 110, which was spotted at a dealership recently. We expect the new motorcycles to boost Bajaj’s sales figures in the coming months.
Suzuki:
2019 has proven to be quite a year for Suzuki. It’s the only manufacturer in this list to post positive growth. By the end of the first quarter (April-June), it sold 2.05 lakh units as opposed to 1.7 lakh units in the same quarter last year. One of the reasons behind Suzuki’s success is the rising popularity of the Access 125. June also saw Suzuki launching the much-awaited 2019 Gixxer SF and the Gixxer SF 250. The quarter-litre Gixxer has received tremendous response, but whether it will be able to sustain its healthy sales figures needs to be seen.
TVS:
TVS sold 2.83 lakh units in June as opposed to 3.01 lakh in the same month last year. While TVS’ motorcycle sales grew by a mere 2 per cent, its scooter sales saw a marginal decline. The company sold 99,007 scooters, which is around 3,000 units less than it had sold during June last year. One of the reasons behind the dip in sales could be the fact that TVS hasn’t launched a new model since the Radeon. Instead, the company has been updating its portfolio by launching new paint schemes to jazz things up.
