To launch in Japan by November 2024
In 2023, Kawasaki showcased its latest retro bike, the W230, at the Mobility Show in Japan. Flaunting an old-school design language, the W230 would make for the perfect Royal Enfield Bullet 350 rival. From styling to specifications, to launch, here’s all you need to know about this retro bike:
Kawasaki W230 Design
The Kawasaki W230 has a retro design which looks simple yet nostalgic. It has a round headlight, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank with the ‘W’ badging, and a circular twin analogue instrument cluster with a small digital inset. Taking the old-school charm to the next level are the spoke wheels, steel fenders and a chromed-out pea-shooter exhaust. The bike gets a white paint job with black stripes on the tank and chrome detailing overall.
Kawasaki W230 Engine
While the Kawasaki W230 looks old-school, it is likely powered by the same modern 233cc air-cooled 4-stroke SOHC single-cylinder engine as the Kawasaki KLX230. On the dirtbike, this engine makes 20PS and 20.6Nm and is paired with a 6-speed gearbox. However, expect it to be tuned differently to match the retro and roadster appeal of the W230.
Kawasaki W230 Suspension, Brakes & Wheels
Mounted on an orthodox steel double cradle frame, the W230 is equipped with a basic suspension setup - telescopic front forks with gaiters and dual rear shock absorbers. With disc brakes on both ends, along with ABS, the W230 rides on an 18-inch front and 17-inch rear spoke wheel setup.
Will Kawasaki launch the W230 retro bike in India?
India has a strong following for bikes with retro designs, with Royal Enfield and Honda bikes selling like hotcakes in the market. Having said that, if Kawasaki is looking to bring the W230 bike here, it will have to price the bike competitively to stand a chance against its rivals. The new retro bike is expected to launch in Japan by November 2024.
Currently, the Kawasaki W175 is available in India starting from Rs 1,22,000 onwards (ex-showroom Delhi). The price tag paired with the not-so-exciting engine and okay-ish build quality, makes the bike seem like an overpriced commuter.
